A retired chemist and salesman, Roy P. (Pete) Nelson Jr. of 3237 Creek Path Road, Guntersville, Alabama died Sunday August 3, 2003, in the veterans hospital in Birmingham due to complications from heart surgery. He was 70. Mr. Nelson was born in Port Arthur, Texas, the only son of Gladys Puckett and Roy P. Nelson Sr. He was a graduate of the University of Texas with a master's degree in chemistry. He worked in sales for petrochemical companies in Houston, Texas for over 25 years. After moving to Huntsville, he worked for chemical companies there and in Florida.
He served as a lieutenant in the Navy from 1956-1961. He was on the USS Charles P. Cecil 1957-1958 and then at the Skiffes Annex of the Naval Weapons Station in Virginia.
He was a ham radio operator in Houston and Huntsville. He spent many years working with them during natural disasters.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the North Broad Street Church of Christ in Albertville. He had been in the hospital 13 weeks when he died.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Nelson; 2 sons, Roy P. Nelson III of Mobile, and Robert B. Nelson (Leslie) of Harvest; 2 step-sons, Gary L. Sanders (Gale) of Gadsden, and Tony H. Sanders (Wendy) of Trussville; 2 step-daughters, Connie B. Lee (Dennis) of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Amelia D. Johnson of Albany, Indiana; and 8 step-grandchildren.
Brother Kelby Smith will conduct his funeral service today (Saturday) at 2:00 at Carr's Chapel in the Pines. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Boaz, Alabama.
